Audacity Sequencer

IGTB's picture

Audacity Sequencer is a sequencer that is up to most semi professional tasks when it comes to sequencing sound loops. This program is probably not as popular or as technically finished as some other well known programs such as Cake Walk,Sonar, Pro Tools,Adobe Audition etc but these programs were designed for a lot more than just sequencing and are much more expensive. The best part about Audacity is that it is free and open source, not confined or restricted under proprietary license. Also in practical terms it's really not that far behind any of these programs as well. Audacity is very intuitive to use for getting some quick results. I've pasted a couple of screen shots here of some of the latest info as of now on this great little program. I have also included the link so you guys can get to there web site and have the latest info as well as tutorials on it's usage. The new version coming out is looking pretty good with some of the extra modules that you can get for it. Another thing to think about when using software like this, is what kind of support you are going to get when you get stuck or start having issues on your computer with it. This is one of those open source programs that have thousands of people willing and able to help you out and all free of charge. You got to weigh it all when it comes to software these days. I find it very peculiar how this program is mentioned in so many forums and articles out there on the web that are talking about PC based Sequencer or Music Software. I have even seen it beeing compared and discussed in the same breath as those other programs I have mentioned above and by looking at there web site it seems as though they are taking this project very seriously and who knows what is in store for it in the future. Right now it's future looks bright.

WMA formats you may ask well read this article hopefully before the links stop working.

I think this is just an example of the same game microsoft has always played thats all and I also think people are also getting wiser to this too. Lets face it the absolute best codec available is a lossless codec such as FLAC but it's all about marketing isn't it and it's going to take some time before everyone and everything starts to use it. Or should I say before everyone and everything stops using WMA. and Mp3's. Until then your either stuck with what you use or you can explore other tools, it's entirely up to you on that one, and audacity is exactly that, another tool to have by your side in this ever changing and thriving business of music.

Check out Reaper too

Yeah Audacity works pretty well for me. Most of the songs and sounds I've recorded so far are using Audacity. "Psycho Acid Trance" is just a straight recording from synth to Audacity. I've recorded a little using the Reaper sequencer also. It's seems to work pretty well. However on my computer I'm limited as to what I can do with any all-out DAW. So I've not really been able to 100% see how comparable it is to others out there. But it is much less expensive. It's uncrippled non-expiring shareware. If used past the trial you're supposed to pay $50 for it, but if you don't it still works. I'll be finally upgrading to a new computer soon, and when I do I'll be able to give Reaper a real workout and see if it's worth it. $50 isn't much for a sequencer, but it has to work well or it's not worth even that. My old computer can barely open 3 tracks of audio or MIDI without freezing. And I know it's not the program on that count because 16 tracks opened and played fine at work - but I don't have time to play at work! :o)
http://www.reaper.fm if you want to check it out.

AudaCity

Audacity is a preatty good if you want to use a mic to record someting.
I havent used it so much.
The sounds wont loop when i have over 2 sounds in the sequenser.
its stanger, cus my pc has just been fixed. (again)
Hmmm........ maybe its me? AudaCity is allergic to me....... (Noooo!)
This is spooky!

Have tryed to import sounds into Audacity to edit.
But like allways the pc makes a mess of it. hehe
It wont loop when i have inport sound either.

But, when it works, its a hell good program to edit and record sounds/songs.

But is Pro Tools a good program?
Isn it the same type of program, but hell more modified?

I have heard its expensive.
If it have a Demo version, maybe i try download it.

Ardour is the way to go if

Ardour is the way to go if you are a Linux user, IMO. It is the Pro Tools/Cake Walk Equivalent Fully featured Real Time DAW. You will have to have Jack server installed with it. This is where you want to go if you are a Linux user and want to pull some hair out learning something new lol. I do all of my real recording stuff with it, not that I have much real recording stuff haha. If you want to mess around with some of this stuff you could down load the Dynabolic ISO disk image. Then burn that ISO Image to CD and then you will have a complete bootable Audio work station. Very cool stuff it's the only thing I need and use for audio other than my Guitar and Amp and old Mixer.

uhmmm

about the linux .. i messed with linux too .. i have a copy of Ubuntu Studio, good linux for music creation -> has all the apps installed jack server and all.
But if you find a problem .. you'll have to spend a lot of hours on the forums :)

FL is not free .. but i find it more faster to loop something :) maybe that's why it's called Fruity LOOPS

Audacity 1.3

I just downloaded the new version of Audacity and am rather very muchly impressed with it now that you can have more than just one sample on each track and some other pretty neat new toys to play with on it 10/10
