Dreamland

Joakim B's picture

This song is inspired of some Eurodance/Trance music i heard for some days ago.

I really want to hear some remixes or a comment or something.
And maybe a tip or two on how i can be better.

Dreamland ... Eurodance

Well, must admit that I'm not a specialist of this techno/trance genre, my own dancing time is many years ago, haha. But I liked these tunes as background music when sitting in front of the pc and programming.

Anyway, your song slightly remembered me a tune/album called 'Trans Europa Express' by Kraftwerk, released 1986. I guess the word 'Eurodance' enforced this impression.
Although your instrumentation is more contemporary: electro-kick, claps, 1/16-seq-snare as bridge, 1/16+1/16+1/8-rhythm pattern for backing high synthmelody, etc... On the one hand these elements are having a high recognition value (concerning the style as whole), on the other hand they're a bit trite (at least in my ears) because everyone uses them.
But that's a rather common problem in composing: Too many well known riffs make it sound banal, too much new ideas make it sound kinda experimental, weird or even unacceptable shit. It's always about balancing - trap the listener with familiar sounds and then (maybe after the intro or the first hook phrase) surprise him with something new.

Back to the 'Trans Europa Express' idea: Do you know 'The Moldau' by Smetana? It's a simphonic tune (1875) describing the Czech river Moldau from its source unto its aggregation with the river Elbe. There's a hook theme of the Moldau itself, which appears several times in variations, according to water's growth/speed on its way. Between them Smetana sonificated landscapes and areas the river flows by, for example the woods, a country wedding, nightly moonshine, dancing nymphs, castles and ruins, cataracts or the city Prague. The listener is on a journey, accompanying the whole river, which I think is a nice and interesting idea.
You could imagine your own song as a journey (eventually by train through European clubs, or by time machine through techno/trance epoches), describing in verse parts the different themes and atmospheres, whereas your basic phrase/refrain would represent stations to draw breath.
Of course such work cannot be done by splicing some nice clips in a couple of minutes, it's more a bunch of industrious days, however, these were the thoughts coming to mind while listening.
